Background of the Study

Urbanization has drastically altered residential living patterns in Nigeria, leading to significant changes in traditional housing systems. In Abakaliki, modern urban housing structures are progressively replacing traditional compound systems that once fostered communal living and social cohesion (Okafor, 2023). Traditional compounds, characterized by shared courtyards and close-knit family arrangements, have long been a cornerstone of cultural identity. However, economic growth and lifestyle changes have accelerated the shift toward individualistic urban housing, undermining these communal bonds (Ndukwe, 2024). This transition raises concerns about the loss of cultural heritage and the weakening of social support networks that are integral to traditional compound systems. This study examines the impact of urban housing on traditional compound systems, assessing the socio-cultural implications of this shift and exploring potential strategies for integrating modern housing with traditional values (Okafor, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

The proliferation of urban housing in Abakaliki has significantly disrupted traditional compound systems, leading to reduced communal interaction and the erosion of cultural traditions inherent in these living arrangements (Ndukwe, 2024). The problem is to understand how modern housing designs affect the social fabric and cultural identity of the community. This study seeks to investigate the specific impacts of urbanization on traditional compound systems and to propose measures to preserve the communal and cultural values associated with them (Okafor, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To assess the impact of urban housing structures on traditional compound systems.

2. To identify changes in social interactions resulting from modern housing developments.

3. To propose strategies for integrating modern housing with traditional communal values.

Research Questions:

1. How do urban housing structures affect traditional compound systems in Abakaliki?

2. What socio-cultural implications arise from the shift to modern housing?

3. What measures can be implemented to preserve traditional communal values?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Urban housing structures significantly alter traditional compound systems.

2. The transition to modern housing negatively impacts communal living.

3. Integrated housing strategies can maintain cultural cohesion.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores the intersection between urban development and cultural heritage, providing insights into the impact of modern housing on traditional communal systems. The findings will assist urban planners and policymakers in designing housing that respects and preserves cultural identity (Okafor, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to examining the impact of urban housing structures on traditional compound systems in Abakaliki Local Government Area, focusing solely on local housing dynamics and cultural implications.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Urban Housing: Modern residential structures in urban areas.

2. Traditional Compound Systems: Communal living arrangements characteristic of indigenous communities.

3. Urbanization: The process of population movement from rural to urban areas.
